The Campaign to End Malnutrition

Global hunger—both chronic and acute malnutrition—now afflicts more than a billion people worldwide. Acute malnutrition, however, is the more immediate killer: it threatens 19 million—mostly young children—with starvation. Every year as many as 5 million children die from hunger-related causes.

otp50 This loss of life is all the more tragic because acute malnutrition is preventable, predictable, and cost- effective to treat. We know how to save starving children if we can reach them, but only 3% ever receive help because traditional therapeutic programs were impossible to scale up. Yet this is about to change:

We now have the tools to end acute malnutrition.

A range of micronutrient-dense Ready-To-Use-Foods (RUFs) have been developed that are ideal tools for treating and preventing acute malnutrition. These new RUFs require no preparation, no dilution (avoiding dirty water), no refrigeration, have a long shelf-life, can be stored anywhere, and can be massively scaled up.

These tools are real and they’ve been tested. We simply need public support and political commitment to make this happen on a large enough scale to save the 5 million children who die each year.

Campaign Objectives & Goals

It’s crucial to build understanding and support among Canadian. constituents and decision makers. Each phase of the campaign will emphasize goals specific to the following:

Public Policy: Create a Global Fund to End Malnutrition and secure political commitments to prioritize ending acute malnutrition.
Field Programs: Massively scale up the coverage of Action Against Hunger’s global humanitarian programs.
Humanitarian Advocacy: Reduce the costs of RUFs, diversify the number of producers, develop new products, ensure their availability, etc.
Consensus & Coalition Building: Create a broad coalition of like-minded NGOs, UN bodies, and institutions to amplify our collective goals.

(The title refers to the 854 million people who suffer from global hunger, although FAO figures released this year put this number at over 1 billion)

Human resources

Develops and applies the mission’s human resources policy and is responsible for all local staff management matters such as salary policies, recruitment and evaluations etc..

Head of mission

Positions the missions overall strategy, coordinates programme implementation, ensures continuity of finance, organizes allocation of available resources and supervises the missions staff.

Nutrition & Health

Runs supplementary feeding centers and implementing nutrition surveys, designing nutrition programmes for supplementary or therapeutic feeding centers, managing and training national staff, collecting information on malnutrition and food security.

Food Security

Distributes food supplies and equipment to populations in need and provides them with the resources they require to produce their own food. Provides training in modern agricultural techniques in order to boost the capacities of the populations concerned.

Logistics

Plans, oversees and handles procurement, purchasing and supply of stock for the missions and for its own operations.. Handles the maintenance of office and transport equipment. Analyzes and monitors the security situation and security procedures. Heads of Base have the added responsibility of managing the base staff including all HR related issues.

Finance administration

Oversees the mission’s accounts, takes care of budget administration matters, cash management and draws attention to any eventual financial risks that might materialize.

Water & Sanitation

Ensures emergency access to safe drinking water and overall sanitation. Finds and taps underground and ground level water sources (boreholes and wells, water distribution networks).

Coordination

Participates in drawing up the missions’ strategy, makes sure that all programmes implemented respect ACFs codes and standards and ensures the safety and security of all staff and missions assets.
